Alternative Treatments For Those Who Suffer From Seizures

Posted on

For certain individuals, alternative treatment for seizures may be something to look into. If prescription medications aren't controlling your seizures as they should, or you find the side effects of such medications troubling, you may want to consider one of the alternative options below. Consult with your doctor before trying any alternative therapies, as some, such as herbal supplements, may interact with medications you are already on.

Hemp Oil

The positive results just simply cannot be ignored. While a controversial treatment to some, the use of hemp oil has become a well-known alternative treatment for seizures. The actual oil that is used is not psychotropic, meaning one will not get high from it.

Many families have seen noticeable differences in the frequency and severity of seizures in their epileptic children, all due to the ingestion of hemp oil. While there haven't been scientific studies in humans to back up these claims, the positive anecdotal evidence is astounding leading many to fight for the legalization of cannabis as a medical treatment.

Change of Diet

The use of the ketogenic diet is seen mostly in young children with hard-to-control seizures, even with the use of medication. Ketones, a by-product of metabolism, have been known to lessen the number of seizures present in an individual. Ketones are produced during periods of fasting, or through a high fat, low-carb diet. This treatment can be as successful as medication, but it can also be very hard to follow long-term and usually results in lack of growth.

A more obvious diet change would be the elimination of foods that trigger seizures. For some, caffeine is a huge trigger while others do not see any noticeable difference in seizure activity whether they consume caffeine or not.

Acupuncture and Chiropractic Therapy

While unsupported by scientific claims, acupuncture is a practice that has been used in China for thousands of years with great success. It is not yet understood exactly how it works, but it is believed to alter brain activity which can be helpful for individuals suffering from epilepsy or other seizure-causing ailments.

Chiropractic therapy is another alternative treatment that can have a positive effect on seizure sufferers. As the therapy has not been scientifically tested, the true impact it has on seizures is unknown; but, many swear by the use of spinal manipulation for treatment.

As many alternative treatments are not backed by scientific research, it is always a good idea to talk with your doctor before trying them. Even those that are, such as the ketogenic diet, should not be undertaken without the supervision of a doctor.
