Measures To Keep Your Legs Free Of Spider And Varicose Veins

Posted on

Some people are genetically predisposed to spider and varicose veins so you may not completely prevent them from developing. If you are one of those people, however, there are measures you can take to limit the effect of these aggravating factors. Here are a few ways in which you can do this:

Engage in Physical Exercises

You risk developing these veins if your legs have weak muscles and poor blood circulation. Therefore, you need to improve your legs' blood circulation and tone the muscles, and the best way to do this is to engage in regular physical exercises. Physical exercises that involve the leg muscles include running, walking, squats, lifting weights off the floor and others. It also helps to elevate your legs occasionally, especially if you are going to be sitting for a long period. It helps to improve blood flow back to the heart.

Relieve the Pressure in Your Legs

Swollen legs veins are aggravated by high blood pressure. Therefore, lowering pressure in the legs will reduce the risk of developing varicose veins. You can do this by maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding standing or sitting for extended periods. In short, you need to keep moving every few minutes instead of sitting all day long. Something as simple as standing up and walking to the window can help. If you are sitting down, then it also pays to uncross your legs.

Reduce Sun Exposure

Sunlight does not cause varicose veins (although excessive sun exposure can cause other problems such as skin cancer), but it worsens them. According to WebMD, this happens when the sun's radiation breaks down collagen under your legs' skin. When the collagen breaks down, the valves that keep blood from running backward in your legs become flabby. This allows blood to flow backwards, increases pressure and worsens your spider veins.

Avoid Wearing Tight Clothes

Anything that reduces blood pressure in your leg's veins increases your risk of developing these veins. Wearing tight clothes in your groin area, waist and upper thighs is, therefore, not good. It constricts your veins and reduces blood flow to your legs

As explained in the introduction, these measures may help, but they aren't guaranteed to stop the development of spider or varicose veins. If you do have veins that you want to remove, one treatment method that you can try is laser vein treatment. It involves using laser energy to kill and close off affected parts of your legs' veins. Talk with a professional at a place like Elite Vein Centers to learn more about laser vein treatment.
