Taking Control Of Your Bladder By Avoiding Everyday Foods And Beverages

Most women assume that problems with urinary incontinence just come along with age, after having children, or even just an overactive bladder. Even though some of these assumptions may be true, what most females fail to recognize is there are actually common things they do that can make a small problem a much bigger deal. This is especially true when it comes to what you actually put into your body. If you struggle with bladder control, the foods and beverages you consume could easily be making the problem worse. Here are a few foods and beverages you should avoid if you have bladder problems as a woman.

  1. Caffeinated Beverages: Coffee, tea, soft drinks, and energy drinks are no good for you if you struggle with incontinence. Caffeine is a natural diuretic, which means it will naturally cause you to urinate more frequently. Additionally, caffeine stimulates the muscles that you have in and around your bladder, which means feeling the urge to go may be more of a problem if you are drinking caffeinated beverages. Not only should you watch out for caffeine in drinks, but also foods, such as chocolate or even supplements with caffeine as an additive.
  2. Tomatoes, Citrus Fruits, and Other Acidic Foods: Even things that are mostly healthy can be irritating to your bladder, especially those fruits and veggies that are highly acidic. Steer clear of tomatoes, oranges, lemons, pineapple, cranberries, and other foods that have a higher acidity level. These foods can cause inflammation in your bladder, which will make it much more sensitive to fluids, making you feel the need to urinate more frequently.
  3. Alcoholic Beverages: One drink may not cause a lot of problems, but if you consume much more than that when it comes to alcoholic beverages, you could be making a lot of trips to relieve your bladder. Alcohol actually increases the amount of urine your body produces because it has dehydrating effects on the body. In addition, larger amounts of alcohol can actually cause you to feel like you have to go more often than usual because the alcohol interferes with signals that are radiated from the brain to your bladder.
  4. Processed Cheese: While natural cheese will probably not irritate your bladder, processed cheese foods will. It is best to stay away from processed American cheese and cheese spreads, for example, because these foods contain chemical processing components that could irritate your bladder.
