Reiki: What Is It And What Are The Benefits?

Posted on

Reiki, or energy healing, derives from Japanese culture. It is a form of energy therapy or energy healing. The word reiki is formed from the Japanese words "rei" and "ki." The word "rei" means spirit or soul, while the word "ki" means energy. Together, the word reiki is said to mean "spiritual energy."

How Does Reiki Work?

Reiki sessions are carried out by a reiki practitioner. The practitioner places their hands on or above the wound or body part in need of healing.

For example, the practitioner might place their hands on:

  • the head for insomnia or stress
  • a burn to heal
  • a scar to heal

While the practitioner has their hand on or above the body, this is when the transfer of energy should take begin. The practitioner is said to feel warmth in their hands while the transfer of energy takes place. They will continue to hold their hands in position until the warmth disappears or the transfer is complete. The new energy is what will help rid your mind and body of toxins and heal you.

It is important to remember that the energy the practitioner is transferring is not coming from their own body; they are acting as a passage for the energy to travel through to you.

Depending on the practitioner, they may use crystals or chakra wands to promote further healing. However, a lot of practitioners do not agree with the practice of using tools other than their own hands.

Health Benefits

Reiki does offer benefits to your health. There may be some controversy surrounding reiki due to it being difficult to prove the energy healing is cause for the change in health. Despite that, reiki is growing in popularity.

Some of the health benefits may include:

  • Improved moods
  • Reduced insomnia symptoms
  • Eased anxiety
  • Improved emotional health
  • Reduced stress
  • Eased depression

How Much Does a Reiki Session Cost?

The price of a reiki session will vary depending on where you get it. An average session can cost between $50-$100. There is also a chance of finding volunteers or students to perform the session for you at a cheaper rate, or even for free. Keep in mind that due to the difficulty of proving scientifically that reiki works, insurance companies will generally not cover any of the cost.

You can find sessions at some hospitals or hospice centers around the country. There are also many private reiki companies to choose from.
